Parallel Structure: Definition and Usage

Parallel Structure (also called parallelism) is a rhetorical and grammatical device where words, phrases, or clauses in a list or comparison follow the same grammatical pattern. Parallelism improves clarity, rhythm, and readability.

🔍 Definition

Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words or grammatical form to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance.


✒️ Examples of Parallel Structure

Correct:

  • She enjoys reading, writing, and traveling.  

Parallel structure is created by:

  • Using gerunds (verbs ending in -ing acting as nouns):
    reading, writing, traveling

 

  • He wanted to win, to celebrate, and to inspire others.

Parallel structure is created by:

  • Repeating the infinitive form (to + base verb):
    to win, to celebrate, to inspire

 

  • The teacher said the exam would be long, difficult, and important.

Parallel structure is created by:

  • Using a list of adjectives to describe the noun exam:

Fiction Example:

(Repeating "it was" ensures parallel structure.)

Non-Fiction Example:

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people...”

(Each phrase follows the same pattern: preposition + "the people")
